January 2001, the Reprieve

FTLComm - Tisdale - January 4, 2001
The latest warm snap has everyone pretty much surprised. These pictures were taken yesterday morning as the temperature rose to above freezing and the streets in town began to take on the appearance of spring. I was talking to a lady in La Ronge who told me that it was the same there and she went on to say that we had better get ready because this would not last long.

I found that interesting because it is a common Saskatchewanism, when ever the weather is abnormally good and that may be summer or winter folks will mention that we will pay for it later. There seems to be this feeling that everything in terms of weather and climate has to balance out. I am at a loss to explain this curious, but deep rooted believe shared by most people. When weather plays such an important part in one's life it is perhaps normal for us to expect there to be some justice or at least even handedness.

As far as this weather system goes it is a major bonus as heating costs will reflect this warmer weather conditions and perhaps those who will benefit most will be the cattle farmers who find that cold temperatures of mid winter really use up the feed but a mild spell like this is almost like money in the bank.
The picture above and the one below were taken a few minutes apart and show the affects of the morning sky as opposed the the morning sky itself.
