PT Cruiser Convertible

FTLComm - Tisdale - Friday, May 24, 2005

Though the Chrysler's PT Cruiser was developed in 2000 it did not hit the streets in
Western Canada until January of 2001 when I did two stories on the "retro" vehicle based on the running gear of the Neon.

The eye catching vehicle has had its ups and downs during its sales life. At first dealers could not fill the demand and then about a year ago sales dropped to the point that they were being discounted.

The convertible was brought out in the
spring of 2004 but few were seen until this year. Yahoo Auto reviews dealt with the 2005 version and showed prices of from $24,740 to $35,225. I looked over an eBay listing of one that bids close tomorrow and the current bid is $24,000 and this is for a brand new vehicle.

In many ways this car is one of those really great examples of the romance of the automobile. Detroit actually quit building convertibles for quite a while because they are simply not practical but then what is there about any car that is practical. We buy them claiming they are for utility and for transportation but then we choice options and accessories that are pretty much lifestyle and cultural in nature.

I had a really good friend in college who's dad was a car salesman and this guy had promised himself that when he graduated and got his first job he would buy himself a convertible. He explained to me that with a convertible he would be enormously popular with the girls and this was just what he

needed. As it turned out the car
had to be ordered and we had almost completed our first year of work when he finally took delivery of his beautiful 1965 Impala convertible. By then he was engaged, he had found the woman of his dreams long before the convertible showed up and I was able to sing for the wedding that fall. Together they had a fine family and they spent their whole lives together.

But back in the fall of 1964 he had convinced himself that owning a convertible was a necessity. But who am I to talk I was driving a 1950 Plymouth that year then traded up to a back-firing rattle trap of a "57" Plymouth that the GM dealer wouldn't even let me park on his lot when I tried to trade it off.
