Today's story is a bit different from the usual found in Ensign, this one is entirely a text document. Though there must be pictures from that winter, I don't have them available to me as I write this, so we will have to make do with just the words. Though last week's story was far to long, this one is even longer, so if you want, you might want to print it out, but it is seven pages long.

This story takes place fifty eight years ago, when rural electrification was taking place in Saskatchewan and one room schools were the order of the day.

The image above shows the site of the tiny hamlet of Vandura, located on the CN Cromer subdivision some 195 km south east of Regina and about 70 km from the Manitoba border. At that time, there were railway section crews every seven miles along every railroad line. This one had a water tower for replenishing the water in the steam locomotives. The maintenance of way railway gangs not only looked after the track doing maintenance and repairs, but also looked after the water tower and serviced the station and other railway facilities like loading docks and stock yards.
