For our family, it was perhaps 1958, when my father began decorating our house for Christmas. Outdoor Christmas lights were available and soaked up about five watts of electricity per bulb. Father got right into the spirit of the project with roof line lights and a plywood Santa and sliegh cut out, with a graphic pasted on the large display, that was mounted on the roof. No doubt, the tradition probably goes back far before that, but in our little village, we were one of the first families, but not the only ones, with lights. In the years that would follow, almost every house had some Christmas lights.
Here in Tisdale, the tradition is firmly established and like our little village in the fifties, most houses have some display, but there are some who really get into the whole thing with inflated items internally lit, complex lighting and this year for the first time, I have seen some projection displays.
Last night (Monday, December 14) I went out and collected a few, a sample as it were, some are huge and spectacular, while others are simple and yet still dramatic. My thirty picture collection is by no means comprehensive and if I can work it in, I will try to collect some more on another night. To see the pictures click here or on the menu item “the pictures.”
