Computer Comfort Zone Part III Regina, Thursday, January 31, 2002 by: Stu Innes Timothy, Timothy. . . Re: Your article "The new Windows XP is allowing Windows users the first taste of this kind of connection, which we who use Macintoshes have been using routinely for the past five years." Win 98 as well as Windows ME, which I am using currently have both had network connectivity of a very convenient fashion. I have included a screenshot of my folderlist in my windows pc that offers a good view of 'My Network Places" folder. You can see two other computers and two web pages that can be accessed just like any other folder on my hard drive ( assuming the network is alive or the internet connection is alive). Folders can be selected for sharing (or not) on the individual computers and password protected; the same for the printer. As you know I am not that familiar with Mac's and I am not at all trained in Personal Computing but I know that Windows Pc's previous to XP do this very well. In fact most Win PC users deliberately remove the server feature for security reasons as they seldom find a use for it in everyday computing, preferring to exchange files with e-mail or an ICQ type connection. Business interests, both large and small set up MS exchange servers in a secure manner for their own use all the time. FYI Stu Innes |
