Seeding 2005

FTLComm - Tisdale - Tuesday, May 10, 2005

Its what farmers do, each year with hope and determination they put in the crop. Though a bit dry soil temperature and the time is excellent for a good crop. Farmers have to put the predictions out of their minds and stick to the task of putting the seed in the ground in the most efficient and least expensive way.

This is a large air seeder which can apply dry fertilizer and seed why tilling the soil all in a single pass. Many farmers have anhydrous amonia tanks on the back of their equipment as it was to wet to put the anhydrous in the soil last fall.

The prospects for the crop of 2005 are a bit of a problem. Economists worry that there is over production or lack of money to buy production, one way or another most are predicting low prices for this year's crop of wheat and barley. Even Canola prices are not looking that great.

With the beef industry still reeling from the BSE crisis there is not a demand for feed of any kind especially with the huge amount of poor quality wheat that was harvested last fall.

One critical factor is the price of oil. This commodity is used world wide and speculation has driven it to historic all time highs. This factor has put a huge strain on the economy of countries that might otherwise import grain. All in all good crop or bad there is little joy in the fields as realistic consideration of the marketing of this year's crop is not going to be profitable.
