Seeding 2007

FTLComm - Tisdale - Wednesday, May 9 2007

This is not the first farmer in the Tisdale area to get the 2007 crop year in the ground but it is one of the first right close to town.

Most of the fields in the immediate area are rapidly drying up to the point that a little dust is being kicked up during the seeding process. You can see on the packer wheels at the top of the page that there is a little mud sticking to those wheels. However, if the wind keeps up we will see the fields truly in motion as a thirty knot wind like that this afternoon quickly transforms the surface soil to blowing dust. This is the reason that farmers maintain a good level of trash cover on their fields to slow that drying process and retain the soil when the wind wants to move it around.

Winds, high winds are common during this part of each year as the cold air masses and hot ones come into close proximity creating a high gradient between low and high pressure and thus dramatically violent winds. As the afternoon warmed up today the wind just steadily grew stronger and stronger from 20 knots with gusts to 30 at 4:00 to substantially higher values at 5:00 when a little cooling began to see the wind begin to drop off to the levels we had seen mid morning.

We have some rather unusual weather today with a high of 27ºC in Regina while it snowed and was +1 in LaRonge this morning. This pretty much explains our wild wind.
