June 27, 2003 George Bush says trailers in Iraq show that Iraq sought banned weapons but State Department dispute CIA conclusions as to trailers being mobile biological weapons labs (Bush picture by AFP/ Stephen Jaffe)

Is Bush not technically untrue, or is he just a liar?

"And we'll find more weapons [WMD] as time goes on. But for those who say we haven't found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons, they're wrong. We found them."

President George Bush, May 30, 2003, Krakov, Poland

"I am absolutely convinced with time we'll find out that they did have a weapons program"

President George Bush, June 9, 2003, after a Cabinet meeting

Today I have come across the term 'circular logic' which is equivalent to our understanding of the term 'catch 22' that is 'damn if you do and damn if you don't.' In his article "Political Leap of Faith," Reverend Robert DeCicco explains that President Bush used circular logic to execute the pre-planned war against Iraq, that is, whenever the United Nations inspectors wouldn't find any weapon than Bush would retort that Saddam Hussein was hiding them, and whenever Saddam Hussein would comply with the inspectors' directives to destroy whatever weapon were found, than Bush would retort that Saddam Hussein had not disarmed as per the security Council resolution 1441.

Now this kind of circular logic is the corollary of Bush's pre-emptive doctrine to attack any discretionally designated potential terrorist or country. Therefore, it is consequential that Bush's circular logic can turn into outright lies. In fact, the selling of the war against Iraq included the forged documentation of Iraq's purchase of uranium from Niger, the finding of two supposed mobile laboratories to build biological weapons, and the plagiarized work of a PhD's student thesis written in the early 90's.

We have conventional pundits who claim that Bush is not technically untrue, while we have alternate pundits who claim that Bush is a liar. This reminds me of President Bill Clinton when he stated 'I did not have sexual relations with that woman,' a statement which could not be technically untrue by the definition of sexual relation by some chosen dictionaries, but a statement which is a lie by our understanding of sexual relation.

So we are left with the big question: is Bush not technically untrue or is he just a liar?
