A clamp slipped off

FTLComm - Tisdale - Monday, May 31, 2004

When the town crew shut off the water line at the south end of 95th to do the lines into the new condo project, they had to open and close the line several times. Last Thursday afternoon there was clear signs of a subsurface leak and most of us assumed that it was a valve that had failed.

On Friday morning the road surface was removed and the cause of the gusher was far more disconcerting. When 95th Street had its cast line replaced in the mid 80s all of the house service connections were made using a clam made by a California company that simply involved two haves of the plastic clamp hammered together and their wedge shape provided a seal on the line permitting the fitting of the line.

Over the years the flexing of the line as it expands with pressure and contracts when shut off has allowed this clamp to slip backward. With a whole block of these clamps it is possible that over the years each one will work its way loose.
