Bolt gave out

FTLComm - Tisdale - Thursday, February 12, 2004

Wednesday morning the water was pouring from beneath the street a block East of Baron's Funeral Home. The town forman had marked the area to be excavated but the priority Wednesday was to get the snow cleared up.

Through the night last night the town crew put the downtown snow into centre of the street piles and will begin picking it up tomorrow.

So this meant there was time to get one of the few water breaks this winter. Last winter intersection after intersection had to be dug up but so far this winter there have only been a few service breaks. So far the frost has only penitrated six feet below the surface.

This one is rather interesting. This water line was replaced in the 1980s with the old cast line being removed and new plastic line installed. At the time the connection between the water line and the shut off valves were achieved using conventional bolts. Now stainless steel bolts are used. In this location a bolt simple rusted out and the water shot through the hole and up to the surface. Repairs were made today before noon and its back to picking up snow for the town crew.
