Bilingualism

"Quebec would become more open to English if the rest of the country embraced French" according to Stéphane Dion.

This is completely illogical and is a ridiculous remark coming from someone who is supposed to be among the most intelligent in the Liberal cabinet.

Should the leadership of eight provinces act on Dion's urging, because of the expense it would not only deprive their citizens of these provinces of badly needed services, it would not change the attitude of Quebec one bit and Mr. Dion knows it. After all, when English-speaking Canadians learn French, what incentive is there for Quebecers to speak English? English-speaking Canadians have been learning French in ever increasing numbers and there is no evidence of Dion's claim that Quebec would become more open to English.

English is the language of North America and is the second language of the rest of the globe in the fields of business, science and technology, among others. To take an active part in this globalization, Quebecers, not English-speaking people, should become bilingual. The Liberal government has once again put the cart before the horse.
