Application of the term marriage to homosexual relationships is to alter the meaning of five words not one. Husband and wife, widow and widower all flow out of marriage between a man and a woman.

 

 

 

My "companion", "significant other", "partner" "spouse" all denote a relationship between two individuals, with spouse now being recognized in law.

 

 

 

Legislators of the State of Vermont faced with a decision of its Supreme Court which had ruled

 

"that the Vermont marriage statutes unconstitutionally discriminate against same-sex couples who seek to establish a permanent, stable family relationship."
passed legislation to meet that finding.

 

 

 

Through a Civil Union the

 

"Parties to a civil union shall have all the same benefits, protections and responsibilities under law, whether they derive from statute, administrative or court rule, policy, common law or any other source of civil law, as are granted to spouses in a marriage."

 

 
The Provinces of Canada would do well to study this resolution to the problem of reconciling the legitimate requests of homosexual couples with the customary usages of our society.
