Not worth the wait

I was pretty impressed with the facts and figures in Joyce Neufeld’s article of May 15 on Ensign.

I was so impressed I pulled out a couple of "cash tickets" from 2011.

As I suspected "elevation and rail freight" deductions totalled about 23% of the initial Canadian Wheat Board price which would be typical.

In order to realise 90% or better the final price of my $6.28 cent grain would have to be what? Just a bit better than double that initial payment? As usual I would have had to wait a year to get that final payment.

I am pretty sure I never got $13 or $14 dollars for my board grain in 2011 making me less impressed with Joyce’s facts and figures than with with her presentation of those numbers.

In fact, I was astounded when I delivered my first non-board grain to the elevator and received payment in full (as opposed to having to wait for months or a year for countless tiny interim and final payments)

Will I be hauling my grain to the new Canadian Wheat Board so they can spend a year marketing and paying me some unknown number sometime in the future? I did try it with 1000 bushels - it took so long to get paid I almost forgot I was making a comparison!

In the end the difference was almost nothing and not worth the "not knowing" when or how much money was coming in; for me anyway.

Good luck to all of us devoted to feeding the world.
