More than a week into the campaign and nothing about farming!

Waldeck - Monday, October 22, 2007 - by: Henry Neufeld

We are now more than a week into the election campaign. So far, farm issues are all but forgotten. It seems farmers have only past experiences to rely on when deciding who to vote for.

On one important farm issue the NDP took a principled stand in support of farmers and their efforts to retain their own marketing agency. Meanwhile, the provincial Saskatchewan Party jumped in with Strahl and Company in their attempt to transfer the marketing powers of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) to the corporate grain trade.

It seems to this writer, the $800 million of extra dollars that accrue to the farm community with the CWB marketing will silently slip into the pockets of the corporate grain trade if and when the major grain companies gain control of wheat and barley marketing. A prize the corporate traders have been fighting for, for many decades.
