Scrutiny Needed To Justify The Means

St. Boniface - Wednesday, July 10, 2002 - by: Mike Reilly

Not surprisingly, senior public servants have failed to answer questions regarding their actions, and who pressured them, in the federal advertising scandals. Both men, who the Auditor General cited as having

"broken nearly every rule in the book",
would only justify their transgressions as being part of the effort to keep Quebec in Canada. Their testimony only reinforces the Prime Minister's comments that even though millions of dollars were stolen, it was all for a worthy cause.

The saddest truth in this hearing is that while Opposition committee members desire to continue the investigation, the Liberal members have voted against calling any further witnesses.

However, Canadians are not satisfied with the level of disclosure, or the lack of accountability in all levels of this government.

Liberal MP's, both Martin and Chretien supporters alike, must understand that leadership involves more than protecting yourselves from criticism. Only disclosure in a public inquiry and a full admission from those Cabinet Ministers responsible will be enough to satisfy the scrutiny of the public.

Canadians deserve a government worthy of trust.
