For Belinda the Liberals Give Thanks
As Our Nation Tanks

Oh, great. A billionaire Ontario politician known more for her looks than her original thoughts decides to dump her party, her colleagues, her leader, and her beau with nary a word (or darn close to it) to take an offer she could not refuse. Just another example of politics, Canadian style.

The defection of Belinda Stronach from the Conservatives for a Liberal cabinet post rips open those old scabs to once again expose the raw loathing that the west has in regards to the self-important, so called center of the Canadian universe that is Ontario. Where does this turn coat call home? Well, that would be Ontario. What province has kept the Liberals in power, giving them the opportunity to remain with their hands firmly in the till? Why, that would be Ontario. What province do polls indicate still embrace the Liberals despite all we have heard from the Gomrey inquiry? Yes, sir, that also would be Ontario. If Stronach had wanted to become known as the great defender of national unity, she could not have been more wrong.

There are reports that other Conservatives have been offered, and continue to be offered, prime government plumbs to do the Stronach stroll. Earlier this month, Manitoba's Inky Mark said an ambassadorship or Senate appointment was his if only he would turn to the dark side by giving up his Parliamentary seat to accept the reward. The Liberals said no such offer was made, and of course none of us have any reason to think they would ever lie to us.

Even so, one can be forgiven for wondering just who contacted whom in this latest scenario. We had a high profile, inexperienced, and ambitious opposition MP publically disagreeing with her leader over whether or not to defeat the government and who actually supported the NDP-driven budget provisions her party vowed to reject. With all this happening, I wonder if any Liberal thought to give her a call to investigate the depths of her unhappiness? Of course not, for we both know that they have too much honour to do such a thing.

With the help of Belinda and a couple of independents, the government has barely survived to continue doing to Canadians what they have done so well for so long. Rather than embark on the fumigation that only an election could bring, the Liberals are now preparing to spend billions of our money on those little promises they have made in order to cling to power. Few of us will enjoy the fruits of the spending spree, but then again, few of us seem to matter. As for those who have made this all possible, maybe this time our memory and anger might last long enough to provide them with some meaningful political consequences for their actions. I wonder just how much longer we will be content to remain associated with such waste and those who insist on perpetuating it?

At a time when the stock of politicians could not be lower, or at least we pray can not slip deeper into the swamp, we have the Honourable Belinda Stronach apparently having no qualms sitting in and digesting privy information of her party's strategy before slipping away in the dead of night to the opposing camp. Ethics? I guess we don't need no stinking ethics.
