Red River College

FTLComm - Winnipeg - Tuesday, April 29, 2003
There are specialised graphic arts design schools right across this country from Ryerson in Ontario to Medicine Hat in Alberta and Emilie Carr in Vancouver. Many other colleges offer courses in these creative and technical fields of endeavour and of course most of Canada's universities have fine arts programmes. The magic solution that everyone is looking for is a substantial and reliable means to create successful students who can proceed through the training and experience and go on to become productive participating creators in the field of art, design and the modern technological forms of these same realms of activity.

Winnipeg, with its unique location almost in the middle of the continent has more graphic designers and graphic design companies per capita than anywhere else in Canada. For a city of half a million Winnipeg is also home to a sizeable number of television and motion picture production companies and projects each and every year. In addition CanWest Global already has most of its media productions in Winnipeg and within a year will have all of these in this city.

Red River College has been recognised through the years as an exciting and viable technical arts school, providing the people who fill those positions in all of its design companies, video and movie production companies. But to keep up we all know you have to plan ahead and constantly aim for even better productivity in the future.

In the heart of the old downtown Winnipeg, Red River College has established a new campus less than a block from the City Hall using four buildings some of which are brand new while others are completely renovated while preserving the historical and historical look to the original buildings. The central covered atrium links four of the buildings together. One of the buildings is operational as it is fitted out with its technology.

Clearly, the College wants to use its developing home to symbolise its committment to the past and its dedication move a long way into the technological future that is evolving. This new campus has been formulated around an operation broadcast facility and to make it happen they have appointed a former broadcaster to head up the programme. This project of $55 million is truly remarkable.

The first building is being used and is the location for the tech equipment while the additional undeveloped buildings will house classrooms and the other parts of a college. We explored this campus on the night of Thursday April 25 and below are some of the scenes that tell this exciting story. To see these scenes click on the images, below with each includes the story as it evolves.
