Steven King more than once has protrayed vehicles as
animate, living things and perhaps many of us endowe our car, truck or van with a
personality and many of actually give them names. My sister once had a little Chrysler
product she named Hickup and even when it was running fine it seemed to have an interesting
spirit of its own. I indeed once owned a 1957 Plymouth that had many of the same
characteristics as Steven King's Christine. This morning I watched for about a half hour as car after car met its ultimate end at Shamrock Auto Parts Recycling. The fork lift operator unceramoniously lifted the victims up and shoved them into the crusher, then as the force came down on them he would slug in the sides to force them to implode into themselves. As I watched them being destroyed, most without motors or power train I was surprised to see how much of each vehcile was still intact, wheels tires holding air, fancy hub caps, aluminum wheels all those parts that owners paid extra money as "options" when the vehicle was purchased new or paid extra for when the vehicle was purchased new because of these parts added value. Now all were the same, metal, plastic, rubber and glass. Just so much weight to be pressed into three or four vehicle stacks to be hauled to IPSCO and melted down. Now they all did not go peaceful several were able to give at least a muted bang or pop as a tire held to the last moment and others came out of the crusher defiant their springs still working and the tires inflated. |
