A fire broke out at the Nipawin Post Office between 5 and 6 a.m., Aug. 20.

By mid-afternoon investigators were still inside the building, scouring through debris, taking photographs and shifting around large spotlights to aid them in their search for clues.

Canada Post staff were standing outside the building while investigators were busy inside.

"We don’t know what’s really happening yet," lead hand Neil Lucas said.
He indicated that alternative arrangements for collection of mail should be finalized by the end of the day, but he was uncertain when service in the building would resume.

"There’ll have to be a clean-up, but we can’t touch anything until they’re done," he said.

Members of the RCMP on sight were unable to provide additional details, though they did report a vehicle between the Venice House and the Bargain Shop on the main drag of Nipawin being vandalized some time overnight. The vehicle's windows were reported smashed out. RCMP were unable to determine at press time if there is any connection to the fire at the post office, or whether or not arson was suspect.

Mail trucks were canceled for the day.
