Judy Sgro and the Harper Conservatives |

The news reports yesterday regarding the events in the
House following the announcement of Judy Sgro's exoneration were illuminating
to say the least. Several months ago, Harper's Conservatives were howling for Judy Sgro's head on the basis of allegations of impropriety and some accusations from a particularly unsavoury pizza parlour owner who was subsequently -- finally -- deported back to his native India. Now, it appears that Judy Sgro has been exonerated. The reaction from Harper's Conservatives? In essence, "Congratulations; you beat the rap!" Ye Gods! No word of apology, no contrition of any kind for having, apparently, made false accusations! Cut to the present. Testimony at the Gomery inquiry is suggesting that there were some unsavoury goings-on in the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party. On the basis of these allegations, Harper's Conservatives are howling for the government's head! But Gomery has not yet reported his findings; he has not yet heard all of the testimony. How will Harper's Conservatives react if Gomery, in fact, identifies the guilty parties and exonerates the innocent? Assuming that they have by that time succeeded in forcing an election and then forming a government, would Harper and Co. then be willing to apologize and give up power on the basis that power was obtained under false pretences? I rather doubt it. In my view, I think Harper would just "take the money and run!" Therefore Canadian voters need to study this lesson carefully. Heaven knows that I am not a Liberal supporter, but Stephen Harper scares the bejezus out of me. His objective, as I have said before, appears to be power -- at any cost. I find it difficult to trust anyone who has such a single-minded obsession. |
