jacket
weather

June 16th, 2000: Today started out with promise. At eight AM it was already 16° out, and sunny, with no wind. As the day wore on, though, it clouded over and got a bit windy; definitely jacket weather. We have had a couple of sunburn days. The first day or so, we dithered around not knowing how to handle it; then we went out for a boat ride. The weatherman promised a few more warm days, so we feel cheated.

family
celebration

It has been a busy weekend. We had a party at our place for Sandy and Blaine, to celebrate their marriage. We also celebrated Blaine’s birthday, and Fathers’ Day. All our family were home, though only two grandchildren: Aaron and Danny from Hudson Bay, and Cathy and Ted Hardman came down from Prince Albert. Everybody brought food, and restraint went out the window. Our place must have looked like a car lot from the road. It was a wonderful time.

fishing
gear for
father's day

Doreen and I both bought fishing licenses, and on Friday we went out fishing for awhile. Didn’t catch any, though Doreen says she could see some. For Fathers’ Day I got a small tackle box with an assortment of lures; they look much better than anything Doreen has in her fishing box so I am sure to outfish her. I just hope she doesn’t get sulky and quit.

pickerel

The lake was re-stocked with pickerel last week, a million of them. Not sure what the survival rate is, but with all the water birds around, not likely very high. Twenty years ago, we stocked a big slough over at Gordon Foster’s with rainbow trout; as I recall, we took out 20% the first year, and that was considered outstanding. Next year it was down to about 8%, and I think it dropped further after that. There should be lots for the anglers in a few years, though.

ReTHREADS

We met Betty Rudoczyk (hope I got that right) at the Trade Show in Porcupine Plain. She is married to Lawrence Schmidt, lives here at Greenwater, and is about to open a new store in Porcupine Plain. It will be called “ReTHREADS & ‘Odder’ Things….”, and will sell clothing and shoes on consignment. It will be located in that bright, red building attached to SARCAN. Best of luck, Betty and Lawrence.

fire
hydrants

Some of Porcupine’s fire hydrants are getting a new look. We spotted one north of Slobodian’s Pharmacy called Fat Cat, quite artistically painted, and we hear that Sara Warsylewicz is working on another. I took a photo of Fat Cat, and will try to get pictures of any others for future columns.

It has been a busy week! Now I can hardly keep my eyes open, so will say “Goodbye” until next week.
