The Greenwater Report for November 3, 2003
longjohns	November 2nd, 2003: It was bright and sunny this morning; of course, that was in Saskaoon so I don't know what it was like at home. Cold despite the sun, though. I am definitely considering longjohns!
on the road	It has been another week of travel. On Tuesday, we went to Tisdale for the Parkland Photography Club meeting. After the meeting, we went on to Prince Albert to visit my sister and her husband, Cathy and Ted Hardman.
ladybug	Ted has a medical problem that makes speaking difficult, and he can be hard to understand. At the lunch table Thursday, he pointed to my shirt pocket and said something I didn't understand; I looked down and saw what I thought was a crumb (these old eyes aren't too sharp at close range) clinging to my shirt, so I plucked it off, put it in my mouth, and crunched down. Odd! And what an awful taste! I picked it out and looked at it, and saw the wings of a ladybug. Yuck! Ted had almost collapsed with laughing by this time.
text to voice	Ted pointed out something on his computer, a program under Windows XP called Speech. You type in what you want to say, press a button, and the computer says it out loud. The voice is computer-generated and can be a bit hard to understand at first, but impressive none the less!
aerial photos	While in PA, we visited the art gallery. They had an exhibit of aerial photos, many of them taken by Howdy McPhail, who is a brother to one of Cathy's friends. They were the usual farm aerials and the captions read things like: "No." or "Nobody Home try later" or "Not Interested." Back in 1952 and 1953, he would fly around the country in his Piper Cub, take aerials of farmsteads, then go around and try to sell the photos later. They were truly excellent photos, better than the others displayed there.
walk on colour	In the middle of the floor were almost a thousand color photos, maybe 10 inches by 15 inches, mounted on some kind of tile. You could take off your shoes and walk over them. A woman by the name of Shelly Sofer (I think) spent some time near Muenster; she would walk a route near the Wolverine Creek every day, taking photos of the plants etc. at her feet, all seasons of the year. One end of the display started in winter, progressed into spring, summer, fall, and back into winter. I believe the guide said she identified some 400 varieties of plants in her photos. They were extremely high-quality photos, presented in a highly unusual way.
tv spot	I didn't see as much of them as I would have liked; a couple of ladies were doing a TV spot and I was afraid of being a background distraction. If you saw the spot and there was some fat old guy wandering around in the background, it wasn't me!
looks like winter	It seemed that on Tuesday and Wednesday there was always a bit of snow floating around in the air; the road was wet in places, but no problem. Coming home Thursday, though, it was much colder and there was more snow. In Tisdale, conditions were getting pretty icy, and there were some patches on the highway that called for caution. Many sloughs are frozen over, and it really looks like winter!
craft fair	We went to the Craft Fair at Archerwill yesterday. The place had all the exhibitors the hall could hold, and there seemed to be a fair number of people milling around, so we assume it was successful. We were surprised that there was considerably less snow there than at the Park.
happy birthday	From there, we went to Saskatoon, where we were having a surprise birthday party for Doreen's sister, Lucille.
ice packs	There are packs of ice going over the weir in Saskatoon; quite interesting. I don't know if it is ice or packs of snow from last week's snowstorm that didn't melt, but they looked impressive going over the weir.
