The Greenwater Report for April 6, 2011

April 3rd, 2011:

We haven't had any really warm days lately, usually just peaking at about +2°C, and lots of cloud, but it is amazing how fast the snow is disappearing. We went down Attridge yesterday, and there was hardly any snow to be seen, though there was a little ice. What snow is left is very dirty as a result of the traffic, so it isn't pretty. I doubt if it is going down very quickly out of the city, though, where there isn't the dirt to attract the sun. A friend was out to Wakaw Friday, and he said there were no black spots showing up in the fields.

We took in another production at Persephone Theatre last Wednesday; this time, it was quite a deep drama but with some funny spots and some strong language. We weren't sure we liked it until it was over, then we decided it was well worth seeing.

Other than that, we haven't been anywhere or done anything much. We went over to Jill's and Mark's and babysat our youngest grandchild one evening, and that was a pleasant experience. She sat up beside me and cuddled for half an hour, then went to bed and we didn't hear a thing from her. The cuddling was a breakthrough – she has always been just a bit standoffish.

Laurie was in town the other day, just for the day. She, Al and family, and Jill and family came over to our place for pizza and we had a great visit. Wonderful kids, and they even cleaned up after themselves.

Emer and Marlon Gudmundson farm just east of Mozart along the highway, when they are not basking in sunny climes down south. Emer occasionally writes letters to the editor of the Star Phoenix and we always find them funny and interesting. Then, a while back, he started writing a weekly column for the Wynyard Advance. If you ever find yourself in need of a chuckle, get yourself a copy of the Advance and find Emer's column, called "Emer's Good Ole Days". You'll be glad you did.

I see in the Kelvington paper that Marty Standish from Kelvington is playing hockey for the Tulsa Oilers, in the Central Hockey League. On March 1st, they won against the Rapid City Rush, the team our grandson, Dave Grimson, plays for. I wonder if Marty realized he was playing against another Saskatchewan boy. Standish got his five hundredth Central Hockey League point in this game. Congratulations!

Marty's great-aunt, Idamay Leech, died this winter. We were friendly with Idamay and George whenever they were at Greenwater, and often played bridge with them and Jessie Rotzien. George died many years ago, and Idamay had lived in Saskatoon for quite a few years, though we never saw her.

I'm afraid we are not very good about keeping in touch – there are a lot of our Wynyard friends living in Saskatoon, but we rarely see them. Too much time has passed and I guess, like us, they have new circles of friends.

We had some excitement here – on Friday evening, a light, two-engined plane with three people aboard, crashed just north of the intersection of 51st Street and Wanuskewin Road. The wreckage was still there on Saturday morning – we go through that intersection on our way to breakfast. Looked to me as if the plane had to pull up sharply to avoid all the power lines on 51st, then stalled and fell onto the sound fence on Wanuskewin Road, just a hundred yards or so farther north.

It could have taken out a bunch of vehicles on Wanuskewin, as it was busy at the time, or it could have gone over the fence and smashed some houses. Looks to me like pretty good control on the part of the pilot. The pilot and co-pilot of the plane that crashed were not seriously injured – just scratches and bruises – and were released from hospital Saturday. Their lone passenger died in the crash.
