strong
wind

November 18th, 2001: Cooler this morning than it has been for a few days, with a strong wind from the northwest. That put paid to the ice on the lake — there is just a fringe around the shore, above the waterline.

almost
clear

Tuesday morning it was —6° and calm, and it appeared the lake was frozen over again. However, the temperature rapidly rose to about +6°, and by mid-afternoon the north end was almost clear again. I don’t think it froze Tuesday night — it was +6° when I went to bed, and +2° when I got up Wednesday morning. The temperature got up to at least +9°, and when we got home from Hudson Bay the lake was clear of ice except at this southeast corner.

ice
serenaded

Friday was quite cool for the middle of August, but pretty nice for the middle of November! Records were being broken all over the province. Saturday morning it was still +4° and calm. The lake was covered with ice at the south end, possibly a hundred yards out. By noon, the wind had switched to west, and waves were rolling in, forcing the ice back on itself with quite a roar. The unbroken ice sheet was undulating with the waves. Quite a sight! It serenaded us all afternoon and evening with its crunching and clinking.

records

I checked my records back for a few years; in 1998, it froze over on November 14th; in 1999, after November 21st, and last year on November 11th.

parking
lot

Al Roden told me a parking lot for the golf course is under construction. About an acre has been cleared and levelled, on the north side of the road opposite the Golf Course entrance. That will be welcome — the original lot was far too small. I was concerned that some excellent chokecherry bushes might have been sacrificed, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Nature
trail

As mentioned previously, the Park has been improving the Nature trail. At the beginning of the trail, right beside the bridge at the Marina, there is a large graveled staging area, protected with posts. At the entry to the trail is an arch built with willows. On both sides are young willow withes set into black dirt, and woven through the framework. They will take root, and the result will be a live arch. Lovely!

beavers

They didn’t quite finish putting crusher dust on the short trail; I walked over it and it was excellent walking, but not quite finished. I suspect they will finish it this week, if the weather co-operates. There was no water in the creek except where beavers have dammed it. If you are walking the trail you will come to a place where there are a lot of steps down, then a right turn over a bridge, and up another hill. The top of that hill is littered with fallen trees, the work of beavers. At this point, you are starting back on the long trail; if that is not your plan, turn back to the bridge, cross it and turn right onto the old trail, and it will take you back to the trail head.

Fashion
Show

Doreen, Helen Adams, and Patti Kosior attended Jenny’s Fashion Show in Kelvington last night, hosted by the Kelvington Friends & Neighbors Club at the golf course clubhouse. They say it was a very successful event, with over a hundred people there, and lots of interest in Jenny’s new fashions.

meteor
shower

Jim and Rose Steadman and granddaughter Cody went outside at 5:30 this morning to watch the meteor shower. Jim said there were meteors shooting around all over the sky. We cried because we forgot all about it, and Rose said we won’t get another chance for 33 years. (Let’s see…..in 33 years we will be…?!)

Cove

We toured the new additions at the Cove with Burl and Helen Adams yesterday. There’s lots of dust around, plus parts of plumbing and air conditioning, but the buildings seem to have suffered very little in the move. A few plaster cracks here and there, but basically with the power, heat and water hooked up and a thorough cleaning, the motel could well be ready to go by Christmas.
