coldest

September 23rd, 2001: Last night was the coldest our thermometer has registered so far, it was down to —1.3°C last night, and still just +1° at 8am. No sign of frost on any of our remaining flowers, though, and Doreen says some of them are very frost-sensitive. There is a fairly strong south wind, and forecast for tomorrow is warm weather but high winds. We have already lost a lot of our colored leaves, but there are lots of trees that haven’t started to turn yet.

some rain

Finally, some rain! It started Wednesday evening and rained lightly all night. By Thursday morning there was inch in the gauge. Not too welcome at the Cove where the yard is all torn up waiting for cement to be poured, but there won’t be much complaining. We got another tenth or so Friday night.

Wadena

Gas was 80.9¢ at Tisdale on Thursday, but it was still 75.9¢ at Betthel’s Service at Bjorkdale. On Tuesday, we went through Wadena, and it was 78.9¢ there. Laurie tells me they are selling gas at the Co-op in Mozart for 79.9¢.

terrorist
acts

Tuesday was a beautiful day. We went out on the boat and had lunch at the old Picnic Table location, then tooled around the east side while Doreen fished for seaweed (caught some, too!). We were out for about three hours and it was heavenly.

Almost every fall, some hunters from the US come to Grimson’s and headquarter there while they hunt geese. One of the hunters has a fishing lodge in Ontario; he brings a bunch of walleye fillets, and puts on a fish fry for the Grimsons and neighbors. I have never been much of a fish eater, but am rapidly being converted — those fillets were lovely, and not a bone to be found!

We visited Dr. Theo Bodenstab in Tisdale Thursday; of course the conversation eventually got around to the horrific events in New York and Washington. Theo came here from South Africa in the early ‘80s; he said people there have been living with terrorist acts for decade — they are a fact of life, and life goes on regardless. I guess the same applies in Ireland and many other countries. On this side of the pond, terrorist acts are rare; let’s hope we don’t have to get used to it!

Kelvington Hardware

If you ever get a yearning for the good old days, drop in to Kelvington Hardware. Eric has left the old-fashioned shelves with their ladders on a track, and for the most part, the floor is oiled wood. Most of the stock is new, of course, but I’ll bet he could put his hands on some parts for an old oil lamp, or maybe for an agitator washer. There are clocks all over the place — wall clocks, mantle clocks, bedside clocks and all kinds of watches. There is a large display of halters, bridles and other tack. When we were there, Eric was busy puttying a window for a customer, and there were several more freshly mended old windows on the floor. In amongst all the odds and ends were some very attractive pieces of living room furniture. If you don’t see what you want, don’t despair — just ask Eric and chances are he’s got it!

Albert
Mennie’s

Right next door to it is Albert Mennie’s Kelvington Bargain Store, with just about everything you could think of. Old LP records, some 45s, and some 8-tracks and cassettes. TVs, record players and radios. Doreen bought an electric knife to use for filleting fish (ha!). I believe Albert checks out the records before putting them on sale, too. A great place to spend an enjoyable hour or so.

Kelvington

Walking around Kelvington, I was impressed with the friendliness of everyone I met, whether I knew them or not. When you meet people on the sidewalk, they look directly at you and smile, with a “Hi!” or “How ya doin’?” Jenny has remarked on this several times since she opened her store — it must make it a great place to live.
