Place Names Society - Update

Regina - Thursday, November 1, 2001 - By: Bill Barry

whazzup

Bob Cormier of Saskatoon recently emailed to inquire about the place names society, and I thought it might be a good idea to let everyone know whazzup.

February

As you know, public meetings were held at Saskatoon and Regina last February, as a result of which about seventy people from around the province expressed an interest in becoming part of a new place names society. A steering committee was set up, and it was agreed that two broad possible approaches were worthy of further study:

  1. a stand alone society
  2. a form of affiliation with an existing group, most likely the Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society.

stand
alone
group

Taras Cherberiak did some excellent work exploring what an independent place names society might look like, and his paper was widely circulated. However, the response was somewhat disappointing. Taras has advised me that he doesn't think it is possible to proceed with a stand alone group, largely because not enough people have expressed a willingness to roll up their sleeves to make it work.

sub-group

Finn Andersen, executive director of SHFS, undertook to define how a place names group might be constituted as a sub-group or an affiliate of his Society. I understand that work pressures played havoc with Finn's schedule this past spring and summer. At any rate, there has yet to be any concrete proposal come forward from SHFS.

Ukrainian
People Place

I'm not sure that all is yet lost, we still may hear from Finn and his colleagues, and I continue to believe that there is a need. But I also feel myself to be in a bit of a conflict of interest position as long as I continue to write and publish books on the topic - and I'm sure you all know that Ukrainian People Places http://www.peopleplaces.sk.ca rolled off the presses less than two weeks ago. While I will be as supportive as I can be, it will be up to the rest of you to ensure that the project proceeds - if it is to proceed.

best
wishes

I'm writing this between trips to the door to pass out Hallowe'en treats, and can't escape the thought that Christmas is not that far away. On that note, please accept my best wishes for the holiday season for you all.
