Tisdale school districts are now online

As a provincial centennial project, the
Tisdale Chapter of the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan pitched in to document the history of the school districts that in time, became apart of Tisdale School Unit. This was a massive undertaking because many of these districts are now almost without residents and the past is fading quickly. Using the material that could be put together and borrowed from various sources, a history book of 123 pages was produced and printed in 2005.

In many of the school districts it was very difficult to come up with much information, but the members worked hard on the project and were able to get the basics on how and who was involved in creating each of the school districts.

Tisdale became an official place in 1905, the same year Saskatchewan became a province and in the first forty years, in this area there was a substantial population with growing families and not a lot of money. But clearly, from the pages of this document, one can see the value that was placed in education and the massive obstacles that thwarted their determination to get their children an education. Two wars came and went and with them serious shortages of trained people. Teachers were almost always in short supply, so much so, that a school near Ridgedale had to close during the second war because they could not get a teacher. Others struggled along with "study supervisors," untrained, uncertified folks, who filled in when no teachers could be found.

The stories are now available for you
to read and to experience, with some pictures for almost every district. But, you have to read between the lines a bit to see the way folks coped. In one school, close to Tisdale, it was opened just as World War One was beginning. The first teacher was a young man and he left his job as the school's first teacher to go off to war where he was killed almost immediately upon arriving at the front.

Though it was a group project by members of the chapter,
Bob Donnan had the monstrous task of putting all of the stories and pictures together, then creating the hard copy from which the book was produced.

The online version was just assembled last night, so there may be a few things that need tidied up and if you come across any,
let me know so we can fix them. We hope to develop a more comprehensive index for all the teachers and board member names on the site, that will come later.

Below are some images borrowed from the site to give you an idea about what this large site contains.
