Sprinkle of Colour |
FTLComm - Tisdale - Friday, October 11, 2002 | ||||||
Autumn of 2002 is distinctly different in so many ways although temperatures now are very very close to the past four or five years. But the what effects of the unusual summer has been the way the trees have reacted. Each species has handled it differently with the ash trees practically dropping their leaves overnight the elms still gradually showing a colour change. Most poplar are coloured and dropping now yet as you look around town you will still find trees in full dark green configuration. Yesterday, I took these images of the shrubs |
that have flashed red over this week and give a sprinkle of colour all over town. From the little sprig at the foot of the large poplar (top of page) to the Cotoneaster hedges the red leave seem like a special decorative touch to brighten up the gloom of fall. The light rain this morning was just enough to bring a halt to the frantic harvesting that has seen combines running through the night for the last three nights. As mentioned yesterday the field was damp in the |
morning but by 1:00 Canola was testing "13" and the combines went to work. One farmer told me they had to stop just before 0500 this morning when things began to plug up. The wind this afternoon has dried out the street although we might see the odd shower this evening and through the night the temperatures are expected to fall and the skies clear. |
Little drying will take place tomorrow but Sunday is suppose to be better and the farmers are seeing the amount of fields left getting smaller and smaller. One farm near town now down to 200 acres while others still have much more than will be done before it is impossible. As the farmer I talked to today said " I will definitely be done by the 26th, (pause grin) of April. But the good cheer is that the crop that is being taking off is going to pay bills and more than half the farmers in this immediate area will see most of this year's costs met simply because the Canola coming off is good quality and more than break even yields. This is good news to learn on a Thanks giving weekend. |
