FTLComm - Nipawin - August 2, 2000

The development of murals in communities is a growing phenomena with towns like Duck Lake and of course the marvels that continue to be added to the collection in Moose Jaw each year.

Nipawin has decided to get into this interesting display work with two very large murals. The one on the skating rink is a remarkable scene that depicts outdoor winter family fun with almost Norman Rockwell characteristics. The illustration is nostalgic and a tad folksy while the stark use of light makes this a stunningly attractive piece.

This year's addition is to the front wall of the Senior Citizens centre and shows the Nipawin railway bridge in an autumn setting and like the winter scene is set in a period some time ago with its steam power locomotive, a democrat and what appears to be a Model "A". The colours on this mural and its placement on a senior citizens centre is an interesting double statement with perhaps more than a suitable amount of tong in cheek.
