| The Saskatchewan tradition is that on the long weekend
(Victoria Day) in May we plant our gardens and have them put away on Labour Day.
Well this is the May long weekend, even though the temperature at six this morning
was -7ºC we are going to give gardening another try. Last summer I was perfectly happy looking after my garden, I went out a couple of times each week and weeded the dust. After having raised a crop of slugs and other unwanted pets the year before we did not attempt a garden in 2001. But, yesterday afternoon we had the thing worked up and if the temperature creeps above freezing we will put some seeds in the ground. No specific plans as yet as to what kind of seeds but no doubt something will come to us. We started with a few raspberry stocks and there is a good chance they will get some company this year. But what ever the case, as you can see in the picture below, there is not much water in the soil to grow a garden and with the seriously low level of the ground water in the area I don't think it is a good idea to pour tap water on a garden that will most likely grow another crop of unpleasant animals. As you can tell I lack a positive attitude toward my garden and that is because I am reflecting the negative attitude it has shown me in the last few years. One way or another you can expect to see pictures and read about gardens all summer long on this web site. As I assemble this page my wife is out in the country putting in a garden at this very moment, for just like the farmers, even though the prospects for a good year look bleak they are even bleaker if you plant nothing. We try again. |
