Nine members braved the snow and the wind to attend the meeting of the Parkland Photography Club held in the Doghide Gallery on February 22. In the absence of President Neil Anderson, Vice-President Bj Madsen welcomed them and one guest, Melissa Morrison from Melfort.
There were many positive reports from the Shutterbug Show where members displayed their work on Friday, February 11. A big thank you to Doghide Gallery owner, Sandra Dancey for her help and sponsorship of this event. There were one hundred ten framed enlargements on display highlighting the work of twenty members of the photo club. Those members who had enlargements that were available for sale were invited to leave these at the gallery on the shelves designated for the club.
Darlene McCullough showed photos from the DVD "I am Saskatchewan" where images of Saskatchewan illustrate the phrases of a poem about Saskatchewan. These DVDs are available at the Doghide Gallery for $5 each. They make great gifts for people who have moved from the province or for people who have moved here and want to give their friends and relatives back home some views of life in Saskatchewan.
Competitions Chairperson, Anne McIntosh, reported that the coordinator for the Foto Fun Competition had stated that the Parkland Club could expect to have the images from that competition for judging at the March meeting.
Albert Orban volunteered to be in charge of the club photo display board where theme shoot winners and matted photos taken by the members are displayed. This display board is in the Doghide Gallery and the public is invited to drop in and have a look at these photos. They are changed regularly so stop in often.
Gerry McLellan is now the newsletter editor and Cindy Neilsen is in charge of the point system. Darlene McCullough will continue to write the media releases and look after the archives until someone volunteers to be in charge of these duties. It is hoped that with more job sharing, these members will feel more involved with the club.
A discussion was held as to what members expected from the club and many ideas were forthcoming. Many members were interested in increasing their knowledge of technical aspects of photography so that they could make better use of their equipment. In the aim of working toward that end, it was suggested that the theme shoots could be technically based rather than concentrating on subjects.
The featured activity of this meeting was a personal camera presentation. Each member showed his/her camera and then explained what features they most liked and disliked about it. Many features were discussed including different lens, settings, zoom, battery life, video capability, and image stabilization.
There were seven entries in this months's theme shoot which was "Spiral" . Following the judging of these, first place went to Darlene McCullough for her photo of a spiral staircase; second place to Anne McIntosh for her photo of an orchid with spiral leaves; and third place to Albert Orban for his photo of a hanging spiral. All entries were discussed with the photographer of each answering questions about it.
There were four awards presented at this meeting. A bronze medal went to Bj Madsen and Wendy Derbowka for earning 100 club points; a key fob to Anne McIntosh for earning 1000 points, and a ceramic mug to Darlene McCullough for earning 2000 points. Congratulations to these members.
Thanks to Anja Goetze for supplying the lunch for this meeting.
The next meeting will be held at 7:00 PM in the Doghide Gallery in Tisdale on Tuesday, March 22. |
