On Tuesday, April 24, nine members of the Parkland Photography Club and guest presenter David Bone met in the Doghide Gallery. A short business meeting chaired by President Bj Madsen preceded the guest presentation. Secretary - Treasurer Darlene McCullough shared the sad news of the death of longtime club member, Doreen Crawford, on Friday, April 20. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they learn to cope with the loss of Doreen.

The 11 x 14 framed photos are now on display at the library and Stephanie Pipke- Painchaud
has taken six 8 x 10s to add to that display. Lia Boxall will take the remaining 8 x 10s to be put on display at the hospital. We invite members of the public to take the opportunity to view these framed photographs.

A planned photo shoot at the museum is scheduled for Saturday, April 28 at 9:00 am with a second one planned for May 12.

Officer positions for next year are now filled. Members are requested to enter four or five suggestions for theme shoots for next year and these will be voted on at the May meeting. All theme shoot entries for next year must be taken after the announcement of the theme shoot topics for the coming year. This gives members time to get those "perfect" shots before the meeting when they will be judged.

Darlene McCullough reminded members about the club taking photos at the Relay for Life on May 25 and 26. Members are requested to give their memory cards to David Bone so that he can download the photos and return the cards to the members before they leave the event.

The highlight of the evening was David Bone's presentation on "The Rules of Composition".
This included the rule of thirds; try to avoid placing the centre of attention in the direct centre of the photo; and how changing the ratios in the photo alters it. These were illustrated with changes being made directly to photographs so that the results could be seen and discussed. Another suggestion was to watch the edges of the photo. Try to add something interesting to the photo such as a sailboat in a seascape photo or a person in a scenery photo or arches of trees in a photo that has a blah sky. Lines that lead the eye in photos were illustrated with various examples of these. Trying vertical shots even in scenery photos was suggested with examples of the effect of these. Photos of one or two people should be vertical shots. A diagonal line through a photo of one person should pass through one of the eyes of the person.

President Bj Madsen then thanked David for his presentation to the club members. It is to be hoped, all these pointers will result in better photos for the club members.

Members then showed their 11 by 14 photos that they had selected for this meeting. These were added to the supply on hand so that the photos on display can be changed in the frames so that different ones can be displayed every couple of months.

The theme shoot for this month was "Storm Clouds". First place went to Don Barbour (above right); second place to Lia Boxall (bottom of page); and third place to Bj Madsen.(top of page)

Thanks to Wendy Derbowka for supplying the lunch for this meeting.

The last meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday, May 22.
