Parkland Photography Club - May, 2001

Tisdale - June 5, 2001 - by: Gerald Crawford

Parkland Photography Club met on Tuesday, May 27th, at Fairlight Studio & Gallery (Note: the change is in name only the location was at the former Crawford's Studios building, as usual.) with seven members present.

President Doreen Crawford presented our Master's Merit Award (our first ever) to Darlene McCullough. This award is for accumulating in excess of 1,000 merit points, and takes the form of an engraved gold key fob. Congratulations to our hard-working Secretary-Treasurer, Darlene!

Our two-projector dissolve system was discussed. Jerry will check to see if it is possible to run the projectors independently, and if so, to try to sell them individually.

Our Club is so small that elections are a snap everyone just moves up one step, except for Darlene and Jerry, who remain in their Secretary Treasurer and Newsletter Editor positions. President for the upcoming Club year is Mary Wright; Vice President is Jenny Fritshaw, and everyone else is on the Activities Committee. (I think we are setting a great example for municipal, provincial and federal governments, don't you?)

Plans were made for our annual field trip. This year, on Saturday, June 23rd, we are going to Saskatoon, where we will meet with Louise and Ron Butterfield and go to the Saskatoon Game Farm.

If the weather is not suitable there are lots of other options, including the Western Development Museum. We will meet at Darlene's about 10am, and have a bag lunch at Wakaw Lake. Instead of a barbecue at suppertime, we will go to the Chinese Buffet or somewhere similar, taking Butterfields with us, of course. Sounds like a lot of fun. Former members will be invited as well.

Theme for the evening was "Flight" and we had seven entries. First went to Wes Swan for his photo of a bright red parachute against a deep blue sky;

tied for second were Harry Bourne's photo of a huge dragonfly over a slough, and Jerry Crawford's photo of a pheasant fleeing a fox.

Tied for third were Jenny Fritshaw's silhouette (top of page) of a bald eagle in flight, and Tibby Frazer's of a flock of geese (belwo) flying over.

Harry Bourne gave us a demonstration of computer manipulation.

First, he showed us a photo of several giraffes in a zoo; second was a grassy plain with yuccas and a slough in the background. In the third photo, he had copied two giraffes from the first photo and pasted them into the second photo, and the giraffes looked quite at home in their new surroundings.

There was a discussion about whether computer-enhanced or generated photos should be entered in the monthly Theme Shoot; it was decided that for now, they will not. As more of our members get into computer work, we can open up a new category.

Needed for our June meeting: Theme words for the upcoming year. If everyone brings a couple of words, we can soon pare it down to the nine we need for the year.
