Me and my shadow

I have to admit that I am what might be described as a reluctant exerciser. The motivation is high to get out and walk but I find that if I go lay down when it happens it soon passes. Today it wasn't raining so I set off on a walk downtown and back, nice enough journey, my problem is pacing. As a fat guy, I get pretty tired if I move along at a regular shuffle, so I tend to walk pretty slow, its embarassing, because I have been passed by little old ladies with walkers. But today I made this remarkable discovery. All I have to do is keep up with my shadow.
Now that's so simple and it seems to work, well it did this morning.

Now that isn't the song I had in mind. I was certain the Ink Spots had recorded the old classic, "Me and my shadow," but alas I could not find a copy and instead found a brutal Las Vegas styled rendition of the tune done by Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.

It was exactly 11:00 when I took the picture you see above. The reason I know it was 11:00 was because I was sitting on the park bench looking at the town square when the clock broke into its routine playing a piece of music then bonged eleven times and then did another song. If you haven't been there on the corner for one of these hourly mini-concerts you really have missed something.
This weekend we celebrate Canada Day on Sunday. The Source/RWB Communications has a nice display to mark the weekend and draw attentiion to who we are. We have always had a difficult time dealing with our nationalism in this country. No doubt it has a lot to do with our mixed origins and of course having to deal with the mammoth, often overwhelming nature of the culture that is just south of us.
I remember as a kid our teacher explaining to us that we were "British Subjects" and citizens of the Commonwealth. At the time, 1954, that was true and our flag then was officially the Union Jack and unofficially the flag of the Royal Canadian Navy which we called the "Red Ensign" . It was clear then just as it is now that we were different from both the founding countries of our Dominion and a whole lot different from what we valued compared with the people who call themselves "Americans." It really is up to you to work out for yourself what makes you a Canadian, perhaps you could take a little time Sunday and think about that.

Ensign will post tomorrow but Friday through until Tuesday July 3rd we will not be posting and though I will attempt to keep things up to day through July we will be doing some projects and perhaps some holidaying so don't expect to see a posting every day. Three things to remember about enjoying summer:
1. West Nile is still dangerous, there was one case in Manitoba already so take precautions to avoid mosquitoes.
2. You are going to need you skin for a few more years to either cover up or wear sunscreen.
3. Every day is precious so make the best of each and every one of them.
