End of winter look
Tisdale - Friday, March 1, 2013
by:Timothy W. Shire

Perhaps its cabin fever or it might even be wishful thinking but it looks to me like winter is getting a bit tired of itself. The days are getting steadily longer and the level of sunlight is overwhelming the snow in the fields and along the streets. Each day by early afternoon the streets in town are getting damp and in some cases puddles forming. All this is good to see. Perhaps more than anything the when the clouds clear away the warm sunlight lifts the spirits of everything.

With the temperature at -5º C this morning and the wind almost calm March has definitely come in like a lamb. It is important in a Saskatchewan way to remind oneself that it’s not over yet, some of the very worst storms we experience on the prairies occur in March and even April but when we reach this third month of the year we know that winter is waning and the promise of a new year of leaves and flowers is on the way.

It is always ironic to think about March and its weather because for those who love and appreciate winter outdoor sports activities the best time for those kinds of things is in March. Skidoo riding, cross country skiing, ice fishing and in the North: snow shoeing and everywhere in Canada the winter festival season is just taking place. We celebrate winter when it is pretty much run its course. Makes sense I guess.

There are twenty-seven pictures taken over the last few days that give you a sense of the way things are in Tisdale. Of course the depth of snow is the main feature of this winter but Wednesday we had some frost. Hoar frost in the depth of winter can be remarkable but at this time of the year it is much more dramatic, it is fleeting lasting only for a few hours before the crystals blow away but at the same time from a photographic perspective the images are of a higher contrast and just have more punch to them.

Many houses in Tisdale have very serious ice on their eves and there are a few images of that including some five foot long icicles hanging from the roof of the
Falcon Theatre.
