In the media there is also a strong trend toward encouraging people to build affordable very compact houses as they use less energy and require considerably less money to maintain. I suspect that this trend on TV and in news papers may be reflecting the truly extreme value that new homes in major cities like Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto are commanding. However, the price of new houses and even middle income homes in Regina and Saskatoon are now routinely above that half million dollar mark. With the present interest rates acquisition of such dwelling is possible but a return to normal interest rate levels of above 5% would even very modest Regina and Saskatoon houses well out of reach for most people.
