Tisdale and area superannuated teachers met on Tuesday of this past week and their special guest was the Northeast Outreach and support services Capital Campaign Chair, Barb Baxter from Tisdale. Her task was to brief the group on the development of a domestic violence shelter which is nearing completion and is situated near the north mall in Melfort.

The project was set back considerably when the nearly completed structure burned to the ground. Once the insurance was sorted out the project was begun anew and once more is almost ready to enter service. Though it is expected to become operational within the next month or so it will be officially opened in a ceremony at Thanksgiving, this coming fall.

There are few such facilities in the province and this one is intended to serve all of the northeast with seven beds available and the completed building will also house the Northeast Outreach’s other services.

There have been local and provincial grants but fund raising from the surrounding area is needed to finish off the capital expenses of this very important facility. Business, clubs and individuals can all participate and contribute to the project and so far the response has been promising.

In her presentation Ms. Baxter provided some handouts to help us understand the campaign and the project itself. Those materials are included with this story in PDF format so that you can see what we were given in the presentation.
