The very nature of photography is to capture a bit of reality, in most cases the photographer records the light reflected off of the subject or scene but the challenge in these pictures taken in a Regina machine shop was to capture the light coming from the work itself.

Over the course of three hours and over a thousand exposures these images show the heated metal coming from an air driven grinder and molten metal from a acetylene cutting torch.

Metal particles emit enough heat to give off light and the imaging sensor in the camera can only record the path of the particle in the darkened work shop setting. The particles not only trace a path from the work point but proceed to bounce and reflect off the floor and the workman’s clothing and protective gear.

Though the light is coming from the metal particles the pictures also show the hot gases coming from the working process.
