Perhaps that is the whole point of this story. People put out a considerable amount of resources and time to establish these special places for themselves. They have chosen to find the pleasant non-urban life style that an acreage affords and having people driving into your yard is a major affront to the whole concept that lead you to go to all this work in the first place. There is no questioning the desirability of living on a property as large as these. Room to walk in, a place to grow a market garden, a place for a pony, whatever you chose to have is possible on your plot of land.

There are a few draw backs other then, of course the cost of the property. These houses along the 302 all are on the City of Prince Albert water line, but do have to handle their waste disposal themselves. Some have lagoons while the more recent ones are required to install septic tanks that require regular emptying from a service company.

I of course regret disturbing the man in his riverside retreat, it would have been desirable not to have had the confrontation, but at the same time, the intensity of his resolve to preserve his "private property" and solitude, seems to come very much to the forefront and without this, I might not have realised the true nature of this way of life.

Similar to the blocking off of the streets in the exclusive section of Winnipeg there is an issue that needs to be address and that is the rights and privileges of everyone, needs to be examined. What exclusivity does private property afford the individual? What about masking or preventing access to landmarks and natural beauty to those who do not own that property?

In Saskatchewan a property owner can not claim ownership of the waterfront, be it lake beach front property or river beach. Five hundred feet from the water is crown land, accessible to all, maintained for the good of all, for all time. It was my simple desire to find my way to the water front to enjoy my hamburger and soft drink that got me into this unfortunate incident. I was not deliberately setting out to invade the home owner's privacy, but merely followed a road that looked like a public road allowance, I missed the sign and hence today's story.
