1960 Chevrolet Bel Air four door sedan Grenfell - Tuesday August 27, 2013 by:Timothy W. Shire
The 1959 and 1960 Chevys were very similar, with their roof lines and sheet metal. This remarkable example of a four door sedan is really what they looked like in the show room fifty-three years ago. The classy two tone colour was not seen on the 59 models which limited their two colour schemes to roof and body.
Though the “Bel Air” name had been used on Chevrolets since 1950 it was not common enough that I had noticed the name until the mid fifties when it was used to identify the mid range trim with the Impala being the top of the line.
The tail lights on the 1959 model were one of the design elements that looked pretty out of place but I always wondered what the GM designers were thinking of when they created the lights for the 1960 version. One of the real challenges for me and others who worked part time as service station gas jockeys was where do you put the gas in one of these fined things. Amazingly, a very neatly fitted panel was under the left side fin that opened to reveal the gas cap.
