Thursday
October 16, 2008
by: Judy White
Saskatoon: At one time we Canadians thought that we could end child poverty in this rich country but in decades little or no progress has been made. The Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers is proposing some major changes to the delivery of welfare in this province and spells reforms out in this story.

Happenings In Tisdale:

  • Sunday, October 19, 4:30 RECPLex, St. Paul's United Church fall supper

Harper's call for working together a one night stand
Thursday
October 16, 2008
by: Joe Hueglin
Niagara Falls ON: This story is suggesting that the Prime Minister's speech after Tuesday night's election was just some words because his real intention is to take the platform released only days before the election and claim he has a mandate to implement those almost secret measures.
On worrying about worrying about the economy and going green
Wednesday
October 15, 2008
by: Murray McEwan
Tisdale: At the heart of America's economic woes is its reliance upon the automobile both for transportation but also as the economic engine at the heart of its economy. In this story we get to consider the errors made by the manufacturing sector and some solid suggestions as to what we can personally do about our environment and economy.
Premature winter in Regina
Wednesday
October 15, 2008
by: R. W. Shire
Regina: This story has four outstanding pictures that show the extent of the snow that fell on Regina on Sunday.
Nation adrift
Wednesday
October 15, 2008
by: Eugene Parks
Victoria, BC: Though the majority of Canadians did not want to see the Conservative government get a majority the unpleasant truth is that after a minority government we Canadians get yet another minority government with the support of only 22% of Canadian voters.
The uncertainty of October
Tuesday
October 14, 2008
by: Timothy W. Shire
Tisdale: The election is unlikely to clear up the uncertainty that faces us all as the economic woes from the United States are going to affect the whole world, probably more so in countries like Canada, Japan and China which depend on exports to the crumbling US market. But there is more than the economy to have doubts about, this is October.
The Greenwater report
Tuesday
October 14, 2008
by: Gerald Crawford
Saskatoon: The Crawfords are back from the trip through northeastern United States. Today's report gives us a look at Washington and a sense of some of the sights in Kentucky to North Carollna.
The need for perspective
Friday
October 10, 2008
by: Timothy W. Shire
Tisdale: This writer is suffering from financial crisis fatigue. The media experts seem confused and so indeed are the viewers as we know not if this is the beginning, the middle or the end of some very unusal times for the stock market, the banking industry and everyone of us as these things deeply affect our lives.
There are always alternatives
Thursday
October 9, 2008
by: Bernd Frank
Berlin, Germany: Yesterday's Part II story on the failure of the economic system prompted this interesting contribution that sets out a successful alternative to run away capitalism or the cramped world of socialism. Go to "Google" click on more and find "translation" if you want to work through the German in the referenced article.
Stocking up
Thursday
October 9, 2008
by: Timothy W. Shire
Tisdale: The new Bargain Shop has a basic staff and today it receive a full truck load of inventory.
Failure of the economic system, Part II
Wednesday
October 8, 2008
by: Timothy W. Shire
Tisdale: The effects of the economic calamity facing Canadians may persist for decades. This story suggests there is something we can do to lessen the blow of this event and attempts to explain the complexity of the problem.
Maintaining the status quo & shun backroom big shots
Wednesday
October 8, 2008
by: Charles Conn
Mississauga ON: What this country really needs is not a strong leader but another minority government that will respond to the needs of the people of the country.
Town replaces water service to the RCMP detachment
Tuesday
October 7, 2008
by: Timothy W. Shire
Tisdale: A major excavation as the Town of Tisdale replaces the water line into the Tisdale RCMP detachment. The digging crossed the street and plowed up the RCMP's lawn.
If you value Medicare, think carefully before casting your vote
Tuesday
October 7, 2008
by: Randall McGunigal
Winnipeg MB: It is important to remember or realise the roots some politicians have. Stephen Harper spent two years as an advocate for the National Citizens Coalition an organisation established to fight public health care in Canada.
One more look at the magnificient fall of 2008
Monday
October 6, 2008
by: Timothy W. Shire
Tisdale: This is the third set of fall pictures posted this year, more than usual because this is truly an unusual fall. It has been warm and the change of colour of the leaves has been so gradual. There are now bare trees and still many that are green while on the ground there are those that have floated to the street.
The Greenwater report
Monday
October 6, 2008
by: Gerald Crawford
Cincinnati OH: The week's report tells us about Gerald and Doreen's bus tour of New York New York as they see the sights and seem to get pretty exhausted as they hurry to go from one line up to another.
We are polluters
Monday
October 6, 2008
by: Murray McEwan
Tisdale: Politicians and taxation make for an enormous opportunity for abusing the real world in which things not only take their own time but often don't quite work like advertised. Mr. McEwan has some serious doubts about the Liberal carbon tax plan.
TMSS Tornados take on Wynyard
Friday
October 3, 2008
by: Timothy W. Shire
Tisdale: Fabulous weather for this afternoon's football game with Wynyard. At the half it was Wynyard up 8 to zip but the Tornados were playing excellent defense so they still had an excellent chance of winning the game.
St. Matthew's 'big' fall sale
Thursday
October 2, 2008
by: Timothy W. Shire
Tisdale: This year's fall sale is quite a bit larger than other sales in the past with inventory both inside and outside the church hall. There was a really be crowd on hand this morning but lots of stock for the next two days of the sale.
Cusp of a revolution
Thursday
October 2, 2008
by: Beverley Smith
Calgary: Many political pundits are concerned about a wildcard in this year's election. That wildcard is the women are both seeing themselve differently and may vote accordingly. Beverley Smith is a well known social advocate and she tells us that women and men both need to consider the whole concept of work as it relates to the issues of child care, taxation and the value of women in this society.
Harper reality check
Wednesday
October 1, 2008
by: Casper Davis
Victoria BC: The Harper campaign for re-election has been going on steadily since he assumed office as he has relied heavily upon American negative campaign strategies with American consultants running the show. But there is more to being prime minister than advertising hype, you really ought to know that.
Fudget Budgets
Wednesday
October 1, 2008
by: Eugene Parks
Victoria BC: The Federal government recent auctioned off hundreds of millions of dollars for the use of various radio telecommunication frequencies for use in this country. Interestingly enough the government considers this part of the country's normal income and totals it in with other revenue and continues to claim our government is in a surplus situation, that simply isn't true.
Stephen Harper: Promise keeper or Promise breaker
Tuesday
September 30, 2008
by: Joe Hueglin
Niagara Falls: Some define the truth as something that you can get others to believe. That might be the same with promises as to keeping them or just throwing them around to get votes knowing that memories and details often get lost in time. This story has the facts frozen in the words written at the time.
The Arts vs Stephen Harper; Stephen Harper vs the Arts
Tuesday
September 30, 2008
by: Brian Marlatt
White Rock BC: The Conservative government has targetted arts funding across the country selectively dropping programmes and in the case of movies and television imposed a form of sensorship. It would appear that the government considers the Arts some sort of enemy but in this short article Mr. Marlatt points out that the Arts are the heart and soul of a society.
Autumn in Weekes
Monday
September 29, 2008
by: Timothy W. Shire
Weekes: As the day wore on it is clear that September 29, 2008 is a historical day. It is hard to understand the importance to us in rural Saskatchewan of the fall of the TSX by more than 800 points or the sell off of the New York Stock exchange as it lost $1.2 Trillion dollars in value.
The Greenwater report
Monday
September 29, 2008
by: Gerald Crawford

Friday
September 26, 2008
by:Eugene Parks
Victoria B.C.: The media and the politicians themselves sometimes reduce politics to a sort of game but the people we choose to represent us have to make vital decisions. Decisions that can kill people or save lives. Mr. Parks takes a dim view of the way the current prime minister has carried out his duties.
Canadian productivity
Friday
September 26, 2008
by:Dale Swirsky
Winnipeg: Canada has the enormous potential to be truly an outstanding country in which to live and work. Unfortunately some of our politicians do not share a view of the country as a whole but only of their vested interest or ideology. At this election we need to consider anybody but the conservatives.
